A study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics stated that women who do not have access to healthy foods often become addicted to processed foods, displaying behaviors seen in substance abuse victims.
Most women experiencing food insecurity usually depend on processed foods, which are easily available in lower-income regions. The study noted that they might eventually develop eating disorders, such as binge eating, in fear of running out of food later.
After analyzing data from various families with varying economic backgrounds, the researchers further revealed that pregnant women from low-income households had a 21% higher risk of food addiction than food-secure households.
